José Castillejo, a promising Spanish footballer and former midfielder for Valencia CF, has tragically lost his life at the age of 28 due to catastrophic flash floods that have devastated parts of Spain.
This disaster, marked by record rainfall, has claimed at least 158 lives across the country.
The southeastern region of Spain, particularly the town of Chiva near Valencia, was severely affected, experiencing over 491mm of rain within just eight hours, according to the Spanish Weather Service (Aemet).
The relentless downpours have rendered it “impossible” for officials to determine the exact number of casualties as rescue efforts continue.
In a heartfelt tribute, Valencia CF took to social media to honor Castillejo, stating, ” Valencia CF mourn the passing of José Castillejo, casualty of the flash floodings.”
They emphasized his journey through the club’s youth academy, where he developed his skills up to the U18 level, and his representation of several local teams.
Castillejo’s football career included stints at various clubs, such as Torre Levante, Paterna, Eldense, Buñol, Recambios Colón, and CD Roda.
Eldense also expressed their condolences, stating, “CD Eldense deeply regrets the passing of José Castillejo at the age of 28, who was a blue-and-burgundy player during the 2015-2016 season. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends. Rest in peace.”
In response to this tragic event, Valencia’s upcoming match against Real Madrid has been postponed, along with all games in the region, as a sign of respect for those affected by the floods.
As communities mourn the loss of a talented young athlete, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by extreme weather events and the impact of climate change.
The need for effective disaster preparedness and response strategies is more critical than ever as Spain grapples with the consequences of such devastating floods.
