A Greggs bakery in Croydon, South London, has introduced a rule refusing service to customers wearing headphones while ordering.
Staff put up a sign asking patrons to remove their headphones or step away from calls while in the queue, warning that service may be declined otherwise.
The notice reads: “When in queue, remove your headphones/AirPods and come off phones or we may have to refuse service.”
Staff say this approach is necessary due to the increasing number of customers who appear distracted and are unable to respond when spoken to.
One employee told The Sun, “The sign is blunt, but we have no option. It’s challenging to serve people quickly if they can’t hear a word you’re saying.”
This policy is specific to the Croydon branch, and Greggs has not released any official comment on it.
The change has sparked mixed reactions online. Some customers took issue with the rule, arguing that it makes the store less accessible.
One X user, Chandy.org, wrote, “As someone who relies on noise-cancelling headphones to be around people, this decision screams inaccessibility!”
However, others praised Greggs for the approach. One X user commented, “Fascinating move by Greggs! In a world where we’re constantly connected, it’s refreshing to see a business encouraging presence and community.”
While Greggs hasn’t confirmed if this rule will expand to other locations, it’s clear the Croydon branch’s approach has struck a chord with the public.
