A tragic stabbing incident at South London‘s bustling East Street Market has left one man dead and three others injured.
The attack occurred around 10:40 a.m. on Sunday near Walworth Road as crowds filled the popular market area.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that three people suffered stab wounds during the incident. Emergency teams, including officers and the London Ambulance Service, responded swiftly to the scene.
Despite efforts, one man was pronounced dead at the site, while a man and a woman with injuries were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The current condition of the injured individuals remains unknown.
A suspect, believed to be in his 60s, was arrested at the scene and is currently in custody. Authorities are working to confirm the identity of the deceased and inform his family.
Commander Peter Stevens extended condolences, stating, “Tragically, a man lost his life this morning, and officers are working hard to establish exactly what happened and to provide support to his family.”
Commander Stevens confirmed that the incident is not being treated as an act of terrorism, emphasizing that police are focusing on establishing the facts surrounding the attack.
He urged any witnesses or individuals with information or footage of the event to come forward to aid the investigation.
“One man was rapidly arrested by officers responding to the incident. At present, although enquiries are ongoing, nobody else is sought,” he added.
A London Ambulance Service spokesperson outlined the extensive resources dispatched to the scene, including ambulance crews, tactical response units, advanced paramedics, an incident response officer, and London’s air ambulance.
Police investigations are ongoing, led by detectives from the Specialist Crime Command, as they work to piece together details of the attack.
