Diane McGiffen has announced her resignation as the Chief Executive of the Law Society of Scotland, with her departure scheduled for April 2025.
McGiffen has held the position since January 2022, where she led the organisation’s efforts to support and modernise the solicitor profession in Scotland while prioritising the public interest.
In her statement, McGiffen expressed her pride in her tenure at the Law Society, stating, “It has been an enormous privilege and a real pleasure to work alongside my colleagues to help Scotland’s solicitor profession thrive and uphold the rule of law.”
She further acknowledged the hard work of the society’s volunteers and Council members, whose dedication to legislation and legal practice has been instrumental.
McGiffen also highlighted the exciting opportunities ahead for the organisation, signalling that it was the right time for her to step down and pass on leadership to a successor in 2025.
Susan Murray, President of the Law Society of Scotland, praised McGiffen for her significant contributions during her time as Chief Executive.
“Diane has done great work for the Law Society in leading our strategic development and in championing the profession and the role it plays within our society,” Murray commented.
“It has been a real pleasure working closely with Diane. She has been a wonderful support and wise counsel to me and my fellow Council members, as well as the staff team at the society. We wish her all the very best in the future.”
As McGiffen prepares to step down, the Law Society of Scotland remains focused on its mission to uphold legal standards, foster access to justice, and ensure the continued development of the solicitor profession in Scotland. With significant opportunities on the horizon, the organisation is set to continue advancing its strategic goals under new leadership.
