The UK Government has announced the expansion of its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system to streamline travel for millions of international visitors.
Starting today, eligible non-European travellers, including approximately six million from the USA, Canada, and Australia, can apply for an ETA. From 8 January 2025, an ETA will be mandatory for these visitors to enter the UK.
The rollout will further extend to eligible European travellers in 2025. Applications for European visitors will open on 5 March 2025, with ETAs required for travel from 2 April 2025. By April 2025, all non-visa visitors to the UK, who lack a pre-existing UK immigration status, will need an ETA for short stays.
This initiative builds on the successful implementation of ETAs earlier this year for Gulf Cooperation Council nationals. Over 243,000 ETAs were issued to Gulf travellers in the first half of 2024, enhancing their ability to make short trips to the UK with greater ease.
Boosting UK Tourism and Enhancing Border Security
In 2023, travellers from the USA, Canada, and Australia contributed a substantial £8.8 billion to the UK economy, bolstering the tourism industry and benefiting local businesses. The introduction of ETAs aims to further support the UK’s position as a dynamic and accessible destination while leveraging advanced technology to enhance border security and efficiency.
Travellers can apply for an ETA through the UK ETA app, which provides a quick and simple application process, often delivering decisions within hours. Alternatively, applications can be made via GOV.UK for those without smartphone access.
Seema Malhotra MP, Minister for Migration and Citizenship, highlighted the dual benefits of the system:
“This expansion of ETA is a significant step forward in delivering a border that’s efficient and fit for the digital age. Through light-touch screening before people step foot in the UK, we will keep our country safe while ensuring visitors have a smooth travel experience.”
Key Features of the ETA System
* Cost: £10 per application.
* Validity: ETAs are valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.
* Usage: Permits multiple entries and allows for stays of up to six months per trip.
* Digital Link: Once approved, ETAs are digitally linked to the traveller’s passport.
It is important to note that an ETA is not a visa but a digital travel permission designed for short-term visits. British and Irish citizens are exempt from ETA requirements, while all other travellers will need either an ETA or an eVisa.
Digitising UK Borders for a Seamless Experience
The transition to a fully digitised border aims to replace physical immigration documents with eVisas, enabling UK visa holders to manage their immigration status online. This shift minimizes the risk of documents being lost, stolen, or tampered with, while offering visitors greater control over their data.
To ensure a smooth rollout, the UK Government is working closely with travel industry partners, including airlines, rail operators, and maritime carriers. A comprehensive communications campaign is underway to inform potential visitors about the steps required before entering the UK.
The expansion of the ETA system marks a significant milestone in modernizing UK borders, ensuring they remain secure, efficient, and prepared for the future of global travel.
