A van driver attempting to bypass a level crossing in Grasslot, Maryport, Cumbria, has caused an estimated £20,000 worth of damage and triggered extensive repairs.
The incident has prompted warnings from Network Rail about the life-threatening risks of disregarding level crossing barriers.
The crash, which occurred on Friday, left the barrier destroyed and debris scattered across the road.
Despite the damage, train services along the Cumbrian coastline remain operational, with trains using horns to alert pedestrians and vehicles near the affected crossing.
Network Rail confirmed that a functioning traffic light system and additional staff are currently managing the site to ensure safety while repairs are underway.
The firm emphasised that ignoring level crossing signals could lead to fatal consequences.
Wendy Potter, Operations Manager for Cumbria at Network Rail, urged the public to respect the safety measures, reminding drivers and pedestrians that attempting to bypass the barriers is not only dangerous but also illegal.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of adhering to safety protocols at railway crossings to prevent accidents and disruptions.
