The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has unveiled plans to invest £1 million in upgrading security infrastructure at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus.
This strategic initiative is part of the AETHER Phase 3 programme and underscores the UK’s commitment to enhancing the safety and operational capabilities of its overseas military bases.
The contract, scheduled to run from May to December 2025, focuses on modernising security measures at two key facilities within RAF Akrotiri: the Primary Security Detail (PSD) and the Combined Joint Support Unit (CJSU).
Key aspects of the project include:
Replacing outdated security fences and installing new access gates.
Constructing concrete bases for CCTV systems and lighting poles.
Laying new power cables and installing updated fence earthing systems.
Managing rubble waste and recyclable materials to align with environmental best practices.
Conducting tree trimming and topsoil management under the guidance of an Environmental Advisor.
The MOD emphasises that the work will align with the operational requirements of RAF Akrotiri, with flexibility in scheduling to accommodate site constraints.
The MOD has designed the tender to be accessible for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), reflecting its commitment to supporting smaller contractors. Notably, the project will be managed in Euros (€), consistent with its Cyprus location.
Located in the Eastern Mediterranean, RAF Akrotiri is one of the UK’s most strategically significant overseas bases. It plays a crucial role in supporting operations across the Eastern Mediterranean and the wider Middle East. This investment in enhanced security infrastructure reflects the UK’s focus on safeguarding its personnel and assets in a region of critical importance.
Interested contractors must submit their Expression of Interest (EOI) and Pre-Qualification Questionnaire (PQQ) forms by 18 December 2024. Shortlisted bidders will receive further details as the project progresses.
