A Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) is set to investigate the death of Colin Elliot, a devoted husband and father, who tragically lost his life in a collision between a truck and a lorry on the A1 near Eyemouth.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, 19 January 2023, at about 3:15 am.
Emergency services pronounced Mr. Elliot, from Cumnock, dead at the scene. Following the crash, police closed the A1 for nearly 12 hours to carry out an extensive investigation.
In a heartfelt statement released by Police Scotland at the time, Elliot’s family shared their grief, “We are all deeply saddened by the passing of Colin Elliot.
“Colin was a much loved husband, father, step-father, son and brother.
“He will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him and had the pleasure of being in his company.”
The FAI, scheduled to take place on Wednesday, 29 January 2025, at Jedburgh Sheriff Court, aims to:
• Determine the cause of Mr. Elliot’s death.
• Investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
• Identify potential precautions that could prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Unlike criminal proceedings, FAIs are fact-finding inquiries.
They do not assign blame but instead focus on understanding what happened and recommending measures to enhance public safety.
This inquiry is expected to shed light on the events that led to Mr. Elliot’s untimely death and explore whether steps can be taken to reduce risks on Scotland’s roads.
