Downing Street has officially announced Peter Mandelson as the new British Ambassador to the United States.
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer expressed his enthusiasm for the appointment, stating:
“I am delighted to appoint Lord Mandelson as the next British ambassador to the United States of America. The United States is one of our closest and most vital allies, and as we enter a new phase in this enduring friendship, Peter’s unparalleled expertise will strengthen our partnership further.”
Starmer also paid tribute to Dame Karen Pierce, who has served as the UK ambassador to the US for the past four years.
“I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Dame Karen Pierce for her invaluable service, especially her wise counsel and steadfast support since July. As the first woman to hold this post, she has been a trailblazer and an exceptional representative for our nation. I wish her every success in her future endeavours,” he added.
A senior government source told ITV News that the appointment of Mandelson underscores the UK’s commitment to strengthening ties with the United States.
The source highlighted Mandelson’s “unrivalled political experience,” which is expected to enhance the relationship with the current US administration.
This move marks a significant step in reinforcing the UK’s diplomatic presence across the Atlantic, as Mandelson takes on the critical role of advancing bilateral relations during a pivotal time.
