Christmas Day at Southmead Hospital in Bristol promises a festive atmosphere as hundreds of dedicated staff work tirelessly to bring holiday joy to patients unable to celebrate at home.
With 2,000 workers on duty, including a bustling kitchen team, preparations are well underway. Among the highlights are the 8,000 Brussel sprouts, a staple of the traditional Christmas meal.
Head chef Celia Chamberlain remarked, “Love them or hate them, it wouldn’t be Christmas dinner without Brussel sprouts.”
Bringing Christmas to the Wards
Steve Hams, Chief Nursing Officer for North Bristol NHS Trust, will oversee the hospital’s operations on Christmas Day. He described the unique atmosphere,
“I work every Christmas day and have done for a number of years, we’re a 365 day a year service so it’s pretty much normal here, ” he said.
“One of the things I love about Christmas day is the atmosphere is truly special. We try our hardest to get as many patients as we can out before Christmas because home is where they want to be.
“But when they’re in hospital on Christmas day we make it truly special,” he added.
Early Starts and Festive Feasts
The kitchen team will begin their preparations at 6am to serve 2,000 meals, including a traditional Christmas lunch and buffet dinner.
Chef Chamberlain shared the camaraderie among staff, “”We’ve all worked for the trust for a long time, you take it in turns and you make the best of it.”
Festive Spirit Across the Hospital
Senior Sister Nurse Michelle Down highlighted efforts to create a cheerful environment for patients, “”Our staff have done some great artwork to help cheer the patients up.”
A Day of Dedication
Despite being away from their own families, the Southmead Hospital team ensures the spirit of Christmas thrives within its walls, proving that even in challenging circumstances, compassion and joy can shine through.
