Theft of power cables worth £100,000 has caused significant disruption to rail services between Chorley and Bolton, with trains to Preston also impacted.
The incident occurred over the Christmas period, leaving Network Rail scrambling to replace the stolen cables and restore service.
The affected line had to be closed on Sunday, forcing passengers to face delays and rerouted journeys.
Network Rail is working closely with British Transport Police to track down those responsible for the theft.
The stolen cables powered overhead line equipment essential for running electric trains.
The theft occurred on a route that has been undergoing electrification work since 2022, part of a broader initiative to modernise the line between Wigan and Bolton.
Christian Irwin, Capital Delivery Director at Network Rail, expressed deep regret for the disruption caused.
He assured passengers that additional security measures were being put in place to prevent further incidents and promised to hold the culprits accountable.
Passengers are advised to check their journey plans before travelling and to stay updated on any changes to rail services.
