The search has resumed for British mountaineer Aziz Ziriat, 36, who has been missing in Italy’s Dolomites for 10 days. Italian rescue authorities confirmed efforts restarted at first light on Saturday after earlier operations were hampered by thick fog.
Ziriat and his climbing partner, Samuel Harris, 35, both from London, were reported missing on January 6 after failing to board their flight home. Tragically, a body believed to be Harris was found under snow on Wednesday at the base of Carè Alto mountain near Trento.
80 Rescuers Involved in Search Operations
More than 80 personnel from Alpine Rescue, Guardia di Finanza Rescue, Carabinieri, and the local fire brigade are involved in the search. On Saturday, 40 rescuers were airlifted to high-altitude areas near the location where Harris’s body was discovered.
In a statement, Alpine Rescue confirmed that Friday’s search efforts had been disrupted by heavy fog, delaying progress. Despite extensive operations, no trace of Ziriat has yet been found.
Discovery of Samuel Harris’s Body
Samuel Harris’s body was located on Wednesday under a snow-covered rock face. Italian authorities suggested that his death may have been caused by a fall, though the exact circumstances remain unclear.
The search teams are focusing on the same area in the hopes of finding Ziriat. The challenging terrain and winter conditions in the Dolomites have made the rescue operation particularly difficult.
Timeline of the Incident
The two climbers were last heard from on January 1. When they failed to check in for their return flight on January 6, authorities were alerted, and a search operation was launched. The area around Carè Alto mountain, known for its rugged and dangerous conditions, has been the focal point of the ongoing rescue efforts.
Continued Efforts Despite Challenges
Italian rescue teams remain determined to locate Ziriat, despite harsh weather and limited visibility slowing progress. Families of both climbers are being kept informed as the search continues.
