A Labour MP has raised the possibility of banning social media platform X (formerly Twitter) in the UK, following a series of controversial posts by Elon Musk directed at Keir Starmer.
Musk, the billionaire owner of Tesla and SpaceX, has recently been active in British political discourse, making public statements about UK political figures and government policies.
In the past few weeks, Musk has demanded the release of Tommy Robinson, suggested donating £100m to Reform UK, and criticised the Labour Party.
Earlier this week, Musk even posted a poll on X asking whether the US should invade the UK to “liberate” it from its “tyrannical government”.
There have also been rumours of Musk potentially buying Liverpool Football Club, though these were swiftly dismissed by the club’s current owners.
Despite his continued involvement in UK affairs, which Musk attributes to his Liverpudlian grandmother, his recent actions have prompted backlash from politicians.
In particular, some have suggested that Musk’s influence on X could lead to calls for the platform’s ban in the UK.
In a video shared on X by PoliticsJOE, Lola McEvoy, Labour MP for Darlington, commented: ” We are the oldest democracy in the world.
“We are committed to protected our children, and if there’s a breach of the law then we’ll use the full force of the law to deliver on that.”
When asked whether the UK should consider banning social media platforms like X if they fail to comply with regulations, McEvoy did not rule out the possibility, suggesting that the government would take action if necessary to protect the public interest.
The recent statements and actions by Musk, including his involvement in the political sphere and online activities, have raised important questions about the role of social media platforms in UK politics and the potential consequences for non-compliance with UK laws.
