Adeel Khan, a 30-year-old man from Waltham Forest, east London, has been charged with aiding former soldier Daniel Khalife following his high-profile escape from HMP Wandsworth in September 2023.
Khalife, who was convicted of spying for Iran, evaded custody by strapping himself to the underside of a food delivery van. His dramatic escape led to a four-day manhunt before his capture in London.
Khan, who is also facing charges of possessing a mobile phone in prison, is set to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, the Metropolitan Police have confirmed. Earlier this month, he was formally charged via postal requisition.
Another Man Faces Similar Allegations
Last week, Imran Chowdhury, 25, from Chingford, east London, pleaded not guilty to assisting Khalife during his escape. Prosecutors allege that Chowdhury withdrew £400 from a cashpoint to support Khalife while he was on the run. Chowdhury, who appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, has been released on bail and is due to appear at Snaresbrook Crown Court on 4 February.
Khalife’s Convictions and Sentencing
Daniel Khalife, 23, was convicted in November 2023 at Woolwich Crown Court for spying on behalf of Iran. He had previously admitted to escaping from Wandsworth Prison but was acquitted of making a bomb hoax at the army barracks where he had served. Khalife’s sentencing is scheduled for 3 February at Woolwich Crown Court.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding his escape and those accused of assisting him.
