Driving Licences to Go Digital in 2025
The new digital licences will be integrated into an official gov.uk app, serving as proof of identity for activities like voting, buying alcohol, and domestic flights. They may even be used at supermarket self-checkouts, removing the need for manual ID checks.
For those who prefer the traditional approach, the physical driving licence will still be issued, and participation in the digital scheme will remain voluntary.
A Step into the Future
The Department of Science and Technology is spearheading the development of this app, which is expected to launch later in 2025. The digital licence will be housed in a government-provided virtual wallet rather than platforms like Google Wallet or Apple Wallet. Features under development include the ability to temporarily hide personal details, such as your address, for privacy purposes.
Ministers view the project as a way to modernize the government’s digital infrastructure. A spokesperson stated, “Digital identities can be more secure than physical ones,” addressing concerns about privacy and cybersecurity.
Benefits and Concerns
Supporters of the initiative highlight the potential advantages of digital licences. Jack Cousens, head of roads policy at the AA, noted, “There are clear benefits, especially for instances like being pulled over by the police or proving your ID conveniently.”
However, the app is not without criticism. Privacy campaigners have raised concerns about potential cybersecurity risks and the implications if digital IDs were ever made mandatory. The group Big Brother Watch cautioned, “The convenience of the app ID becomes a problem when it is required for basic functions.”
Another limitation is that the digital driving licence may not be accepted abroad, leaving travelers relying on the physical licence in certain situations.

The digital licence could simplify age verification in everyday scenarios. Supermarkets are considering linking the app to self-checkout systems, and businesses like bars and clubs may adopt it for quicker ID checks. However, the app’s primary focus remains enhancing security and convenience for UK residents.
