Two Jewish men have been stabbed in north London in what is being treated as a suspected antisemitic attack, prompting a major investigation led by counter-terrorism officers.
The incident took place in Golders Green on Wednesday morning, amid heightened concerns following a series of recent attacks targeting Jewish communities in the capital.
Police Launch Counter-Terror Investigation
Officers from Metropolitan Police responded to reports of a stabbing shortly after 11am, with armed units and emergency services arriving at the scene in Highfield Avenue.
A 45-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after being subdued with a Taser. Police confirmed the suspect also attempted to stab officers during the arrest but no officers were injured.
The investigation is being led by counter-terrorism detectives as authorities assess whether the attack was motivated by extremist ideology. Officials have not yet formally classified the incident as terrorism, but this remains under consideration.
Victims in Stable Condition After Attack
The two victims, one in his 70s and the other in his 30s, were treated at the scene before being taken to hospital, where both remain in stable condition.
Witnesses reported seeing the suspect armed with a knife in the area, with members of the Jewish neighbourhood security group Shomrim assisting before police intervention.
Volunteer emergency responders from Hatzola also provided immediate medical assistance to the victims.
Community Groups and Leaders Condemn Attack
The attack has drawn strong condemnation from political leaders and community organisations.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the incident as “utterly appalling,” stating that attacks on Jewish communities are attacks on Britain as a whole.
London mayor Sadiq Khan said there must be “absolutely no place for antisemitism in society,” confirming that police patrols in the area had been increased to reassure residents.
The Community Security Trust and the Board of Deputies of British Jews said they were working closely with authorities to monitor the situation and support the affected community.
Series of Recent Attacks Raise Alarm
The stabbing comes after a number of recent incidents targeting Jewish sites in London, including arson attacks in the same area.
Earlier this week, an attempted fire attack was reported near a local memorial site, while in March several Jewish community ambulances were destroyed in a suspected arson attack.
Authorities say the proximity of these incidents is a key focus of the ongoing investigation, as they examine whether there is any connection between the attacks.
Security Concerns Intensify Across London
The rise in antisemitic incidents has prompted increased security measures and calls for stronger action to protect vulnerable communities.
Local MPs and officials have expressed concern about the pattern of violence, urging swift action to bring those responsible to justice and prevent further attacks.
Police have appealed for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward as they continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Rising Antisemitism and Security Measures
The UK has seen a rise in reported antisemitic incidents in recent years, particularly during periods of heightened international tension.
Security organisations and law enforcement agencies have stepped up monitoring and protection efforts around Jewish schools, synagogues and community centres.
The latest attack underscores ongoing concerns about public safety and the need for coordinated responses between police, government and community groups.
As investigations continue, authorities have reiterated their commitment to tackling hate crime and ensuring the safety of all communities across London.
