A man accused of murdering his wife and two daughters in Bedfordshire has appeared before a court in South Africa after being arrested in Johannesburg.
Ndodana Mkhanyisi Tshuma, 45, a British citizen of Zimbabwean heritage, was remanded in custody until 22 July while South African authorities determine whether he is legally in the country and consider the UK’s extradition request.
British prosecutors have authorised three murder charges against Tshuma following the deaths of his 42-year-old wife and their daughters, aged 15 and five. The victims were found at their family home in Bedfordshire earlier this month.
According to South African police, Tshuma left the UK through Heathrow Airport before the bodies were discovered.
Authorities in South Africa have also charged him with illegal possession of a firearm, an offence that carries a potential prison sentence of up to 15 years for a first-time offender.
Police said their investigation indicates that Tshuma purchased an unlicensed firearm shortly after arriving in South Africa on 5 July. Investigators believe the weapon may have been intended for him to take his own life.
South African police confirmed they have received a provisional extradition request from the UK and are awaiting the full documentation before legal proceedings can continue.
Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said members of Tshuma’s family in South Africa cooperated fully with investigators and played a key role in helping officers locate and arrest him.
The extradition process is expected to continue alongside the South African firearms case as authorities in both countries work together on the investigation.
