The official X account of the UK Consulate General in Jerusalem, which represents the UK in the occupied Palestinian territories, has been suspended after sharing a statement highlighting the treatment of Palestinians held in Israeli prisons.
The account, “UKinJerusalem”, reposted a joint statement on Sunday issued by diplomatic missions from several countries and organisations, including the UK, the European Union and Canada.
Shortly after publishing the statement, the account appeared to have been suspended. Neither the UK Government, Israeli authorities nor X has issued an official explanation for the suspension.
The British Consulate General in Jerusalem represents the UK Government in Jerusalem, the occupied West Bank and Gaza.
The joint statement focused on the conditions of more than 9,000 Palestinians held in Israeli prisons and detention centres, noting that many are being held under “administrative detention” without formal charges or trial.
It stated that Palestinian detainees face serious and systematic rights violations, including inadequate food, limited access to medical care, and restrictions on or complete denial of family visits.
The statement called for Palestinians to receive fair trial guarantees and access to legal representation.
It also urged Israeli authorities to allow the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to resume visits to prisons and detention facilities.
The suspension has drawn attention because it followed the publication of the diplomatic statement, although no official link between the two events has been confirmed.
Separately, Israeli civil society organisations have criticised conditions in Israeli prisons and military detention centres, alleging that international legal standards and human rights conventions are being disregarded. They have also accused authorities of allowing systematic abuses, including reported sexual violence against Palestinian detainees.
