Around 20,000 homes were left without electricity after a distressed man climbed a high-voltage power pylon in Brighouse, West Yorkshire, prompting a major emergency response and widespread power outages.
The incident unfolded near Brighouse Marina and close to a Sainsbury’s supermarket in the town centre on Friday morning, with shocked witnesses reporting that the man appeared visibly upset before ascending the structure.
West Yorkshire Police confirmed they were alerted shortly after 9am.
A spokesperson said: “Emergency services were called to the site of an electricity pylon close to Brighouse Marina at 9:15am today following reports of concern for the safety of a man who had reportedly climbed up the structure.”
The Yorkshire Ambulance Service was dispatched to the scene at approximately 9.23am, while police and other emergency responders secured the surrounding area.
As a precaution, electricity supplies were disrupted, leaving thousands of households without power across parts of Brighouse and surrounding areas in West Yorkshire. Engineers later began restoring supply once the situation was brought under control.
“The man climbed down the pylon shortly after 11:30am and was arrested. He is not thought to have suffered any injuries during the incident.”
Electricity pylons are critical components of the UK’s national grid infrastructure, carrying high-voltage lines capable of delivering lethal electric shocks within seconds. Climbing such structures without specialist training poses extreme danger, not only to the individual involved but also to the wider public due to potential power disruptions.
Previous incidents have highlighted the serious risks. In 2017, a man in his 30s was rescued after being found dangling around 60 feet above ground from an electricity pylon in Hutton, Lancashire. Emergency services mounted a large-scale operation to reach him on a 275kV transmission line.
Friday’s incident in Brighouse has raised fresh concerns about public safety and the vulnerability of key energy infrastructure, particularly when emergency situations result in widespread power cuts affecting thousands of residents.
Authorities have not released further details regarding the circumstances leading up to the man’s actions.
