A major Christopher Harborne donation Reform UK contribution has strengthened Nigel Farage’s party finances after the businessman gave another £3m, adding to the record £9m he donated last summer.
The new funding significantly increases Reform UK’s campaign resources ahead of upcoming local elections, as the party seeks to expand its political presence across England and Wales.
Financial disclosures show Reform UK raised £5.5m during the final quarter of 2025, surpassing all other UK political parties during the same period.
Major donor strengthens Reform UK finances
Christopher Harborne, a Thailand-based aviation and cryptocurrency investor, has become one of the most influential financial backers of Nigel Farage’s political movement.
His latest £3m donation adds to the substantial funding he has previously provided to parties aligned with Farage.
Harborne donated £10m to the Brexit Party during the 2019 election campaign and later contributed £1m to support the office of former prime minister Boris Johnson after Johnson stepped down.
The additional funding will help bolster Reform UK’s campaign efforts ahead of local elections scheduled for May, where the party hopes to gain council seats and increase its influence.
Reform UK leads quarterly fundraising
According to the latest figures, Reform UK raised £5.5m in the final quarter of 2025.
That total exceeded fundraising by all other major UK political parties during the same period.
By comparison, the Conservative Party received about £4m in donations, while the Liberal Democrats raised more than £2m and Labour secured close to £2m.
The financial advantage could play a role in strengthening Reform UK’s national campaign as the party continues to perform strongly in opinion polls.
Donations from business figures
In addition to the Harborne donation, Reform UK also received several six-figure contributions from business leaders and investors.
Notable donors included biotech entrepreneur David Grainger, a company owned by double-glazing businessman Gary Dutton, Lebanese-Irish technology billionaire Bassim Haidar and Monaco-based metals broker Ashley Levett.
Isabel Goldsmith, the sibling of Conservative peer Zac Goldsmith, also contributed to the party’s fundraising.
Reform UK further accepted an £11,500 donation from Frederick Hesketh, the son of former Conservative peer Alexander Fermor-Hesketh, who later joined Ukip.
Traditional Conservative donor backs Reform
One notable contribution came from JC Bamford Excavators, the manufacturer widely known as JCB.
The company donated £200,000 to Reform UK during the quarter while also giving the same amount to the Conservative Party.
The dual donation illustrates the shifting financial landscape in British politics as donors increasingly spread support across multiple parties.
Pressure grows for political donation limits
The scale of major donations to political parties has reignited debate about campaign finance rules in the UK.
Harborne’s contributions to Reform UK, along with the £20m donation from businessman Frank Hester to the Conservative Party ahead of the 2024 general election, have intensified calls for stricter limits.
Some MPs and campaign groups argue that caps on political donations could reduce the influence of wealthy individuals on party funding.
In addition, several Labour parliamentary committee chairs have urged the government to consider banning political donations made through cryptocurrency.
Electoral Commission calls for stronger oversight
The latest donation figures were released by the Electoral Commission as part of its regular transparency reporting.
Jackie Killeen, director of regulation at the commission, said nearly £65m in political donations had been accepted by UK parties throughout 2025.
She said transparency about party funding remained essential to maintaining public trust in the political system.
“Almost £65m in donations was accepted by political parties during 2025,” Killeen said.
“The UK political finance system has high levels of transparency, and voters are interested in where parties get their money from.”
Proposed reforms to political finance rules
The Electoral Commission has repeatedly called for reforms to strengthen donation controls and improve oversight.
Potential changes could be included in the government’s representation of the people bill, which aims to modernise electoral laws and update the political finance framework.
The commission said it would continue working with ministers to ensure any new legislation improves transparency while remaining practical to enforce.
Funding battles ahead of key elections
The growing importance of political donations reflects the escalating cost of modern election campaigns.
Parties require significant resources to fund advertising, campaign staff, data operations and voter outreach.
Reform UK has gained momentum in opinion polls over the past year, positioning itself as a major challenger to traditional parties.
The latest Christopher Harborne donation Reform UK contribution is expected to play a key role in supporting the party’s campaign activities as it prepares for upcoming local elections across England and Wales.
