Former Premier League footballer Joey Barton has been denied bail following a court hearing after being charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm with intent.
The 43-year-old, from Widnes in Cheshire, has been in custody since appearing at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on 10 March. Barton, who previously played for Manchester City, Newcastle United and Queens Park Rangers, now faces further legal proceedings.
On Friday, Judge David Potter refused his bail application at Liverpool Crown Court. Most of the hearing was held in private, with the decision later announced in open court.
Barton did not attend the hearing but was represented by Simon Csoka KC. He is due to appear again at Liverpool Crown Court on 7 April.
The case relates to an alleged incident on 8 March near Huyton and Prescot Golf Club. Barton and his co-defendant, Gary O’Grady, 50, from Huyton, are accused of attacking a man named Kevin Lynch.
O’Grady was granted conditional bail following an earlier hearing at the magistrates’ court.
Barton earned one cap for England during his playing career and featured for several clubs including Rangers, Burnley and Marseille before retiring in 2017.
He later moved into management, taking charge of Fleetwood Town between 2018 and 2021, followed by a spell at Bristol Rovers from 2021 to 2023.
More recently, Barton has hosted the podcast Common Sense With Joey Barton, described as an “unfiltered” take on sport, politics and social issues.
