Sir Keir Starmer‘s visit to Kyiv’s presidential palace was dramatically underscored by the downing of a drone overhead, delivering a stark reminder of the daily dangers faced by Ukraine.
The UK Prime Minister met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss Ukraine’s future steps in its ongoing defence against Russian aggression. This marks Sir Keir’s first official visit to Kyiv since his election victory in July last year.
As the leaders convened, the sound of anti-aircraft gunfire echoed through the palace courtyard. Air raid sirens signalled potential drone activity, a daily occurrence in Ukraine but rarely so close to the presidential seat.
A drone was reportedly neutralised mid-air, although eyewitness accounts suggest at least two drones were in operation. It is believed these were likely surveillance devices, as the downed drone did not detonate upon impact.
President Zelenskyy, displaying his trademark resilience, responded to the incident by remarking: “We will say hello to them too,” referring to Russia.
Starmer Condemns Russian Aggression
In an exclusive interview with Sky’s political editor Beth Rigby, Sir Keir described the drone threat as a sobering reminder of Ukraine’s ongoing struggles. He reiterated the UK’s unwavering support, stating the war is the result of “Russian aggression”.
He reaffirmed his backing for Ukraine’s eventual membership in NATO, citing discussions at last year’s NATO summit in Washington that set Ukraine on an “irreversible path” to joining the alliance.
However, President Zelenskyy expressed frustration over the lack of consensus among Western allies, naming the US, Slovakia, Germany, and Hungary as nations reluctant to endorse Ukraine’s NATO membership.
Zelenskyy’s remarks come as the incoming Trump administration signals understanding of Moscow’s opposition to Ukraine joining the alliance, with President-elect Trump acknowledging Russia’s unease over NATO’s expansion to its borders.
Strength Through Unity
During a press conference rich in symbolism, Sir Keir pledged the UK’s steadfast commitment to Ukraine, vowing to provide unwavering support for as long as necessary.
He emphasised the importance of placing Kyiv in a strong negotiating position with Russia and promised to work towards securing guarantees for Ukraine’s long-term security in any future ceasefire agreements.
Sir Keir left the door open to potential UK involvement in training missions or peacekeeping roles, declaring that “nothing is off the table” when it comes to supporting Ukraine.
“A just and lasting peace comes through strength,” Sir Keir asserted, encapsulating the UK’s position as it continues to stand by Ukraine during these challenging times.
