A major emergency response was launched in Essex after a powerful explosion, believed to have been caused by fertiliser stored inside an industrial unit, ignited a devastating fire that tore through multiple buildings and prompted authorities to declare a major incident.
More than 100 firefighters were deployed to combat the blaze, which engulfed an industrial site near the village of Rettendon, south of Chelmsford. The explosion generated a towering fireball visible from miles away, while residents across the county reported hearing an enormous blast that shook homes, rattled windows and sent debris flying across nearby farmland.
Emergency services confirmed that the fire continued burning into Saturday, although crews had succeeded in surrounding the main blaze. Investigators have since begun examining the cause of the incident, which remains under active investigation.
Emergency Services Launch Large-Scale Response
Essex County Fire and Rescue Service mounted an extensive emergency operation after the explosion dramatically escalated the fire. Specialist firefighting teams, hazardous materials advisers and emergency response personnel were mobilised to contain the blaze and protect surrounding communities. The East of England Ambulance Service deployed its Hazardous Area Response Team alongside police officers, who assisted with evacuations and public safety measures while firefighters worked under extremely hazardous conditions.
Residents living near the industrial estate were advised to keep windows and doors closed as dense smoke spread across the surrounding area, raising concerns about air quality. Authorities also established safety cordons while monitoring the situation for any further risks.
By Saturday morning, the emergency response had been reduced as the fire came under greater control, with approximately 25 firefighters remaining on site to extinguish persistent hotspots and monitor the affected buildings. Officials indicated that firefighting operations would continue throughout the day until the remaining fire had been fully extinguished.

Dave Bond of Essex County Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that fertiliser stored within one of the industrial units exploded while firefighters were already responding to the initial blaze.
He explained that the powerful detonation was the principal reason authorities elevated the situation to a major incident, noting that residents across Essex had both heard and physically felt the explosion.
Despite the dramatic nature of the incident, Bond reassured the public that there was no continuing widespread danger beyond the immediate area. He confirmed that all emergency responders operating at the scene remained safe and that precautionary evacuations had been successfully carried out to protect nearby residents.
Officials continued to emphasise that public safety remained their highest priority as crews worked to stabilise the incident.
Buildings and Vehicles Destroyed by Fire
The blaze caused extensive destruction across the industrial site and adjacent farmland. Multiple industrial units were severely damaged or completely destroyed, while several vehicles and agricultural structures were consumed by the fire.
Business owners based at the affected premises began assessing the scale of the losses as soon as emergency officials declared the site sufficiently secure.
Sam Dimond, whose event production company Spotlight Sound operates from the industrial estate, said the business was evaluating the damage to its premises and equipment.
He expressed gratitude to the emergency services for their swift response and praised firefighters for preventing an even greater disaster. Dimond also confirmed that the safety and wellbeing of his staff remained the company’s immediate priority and that every member of his team had been safely accounted for.
Earlier, he acknowledged that numerous businesses occupying neighbouring units had suffered devastating losses after the fire rapidly spread across the industrial complex.
Witnesses Describe Powerful Blast and Fireball
Residents across Essex described scenes of extraordinary destruction following the explosion, with many comparing the blast to a bomb or a military detonation. Jackie Head, who lives close to the industrial site, said she initially noticed smoke before witnessing what she described as a massive explosion. She recalled seeing an enormous orange and yellow fireball rise into the sky in the shape of a mushroom cloud while the force of the blast shook surrounding properties.
She also reported that fragments of metal were propelled through the air, with one piece landing only metres away and igniting dry grass nearby. Additional debris reportedly landed in adjacent fields, causing secondary fires that residents attempted to extinguish before emergency crews arrived.
Her husband, Phil Head, described the situation as chaotic, explaining that pieces of shrapnel ignited vegetation behind their property within moments of the explosion.
Shockwaves Felt Across Essex
The force of the explosion extended far beyond the immediate vicinity of the industrial site. Adrian Walker, from Ashingdon, approximately 15 miles from Rettendon, said the blast caused the ground to shake, buildings to vibrate and windows to rattle throughout the area. Initially believing the noise originated from military testing at the Ministry of Defence’s Shoeburyness range, he later discovered that residents across large parts of Essex had experienced the same phenomenon.
Matthew Fergusson, from Wickford, also reported seeing a towering mushroom cloud following what he described as a massive explosion. After initially mistaking the noise for something falling inside his home, he stepped outside to find neighbours gathered in the street reacting to the incident.
Steven Whan, from nearby Bicknacre, said the explosion resembled the sonic boom of a military aircraft. He explained that the blast was so powerful it shook his home and even activated his doorbell, prompting him to believe an aircraft had broken the sound barrier before learning of the industrial fire.
Investigation Continues as Community Recovers
Fire investigators have begun examining the circumstances surrounding the incident to determine how the fire started and why it escalated into such a destructive explosion.
Emergency services continue to monitor the site while specialist officers assess structural safety and eliminate remaining fire hazards. Authorities have not confirmed whether anyone sustained injuries, although officials stated that all emergency responders remained unharmed and precautionary evacuations were completed successfully.
Basildon Council leader Andy Barnes thanked the emergency services for their rapid and professional response, expressing support for everyone affected by the incident and hoping that those impacted would recover swiftly.
