Tesco stores across the UK are experiencing a banana shortage, with bad weather reportedly causing shipment delays.
Customers in Maidstone, London, Bournemouth, and the Isle of Sheppey have encountered empty shelves, sparking frustration on social media.
At Tesco’s Osterley branch in West London, a sign informed shoppers, “We are sorry that bananas are out of stock due to bad weather conditions. We are working hard with our suppliers to refill our shelves.” Tesco has yet to issue an official statement.
Shoppers have taken to social media to express their surprise and frustration over the missing bananas.
One Bournemouth customer posted: “What, no bananas!” alongside a photo of empty shelves.
Another in Kent joked, “Yes, we have no bananas! Empty shelves at Tesco on the sun-kissed Isle of Sheppey today following the non arrival of the banana boat.”
A confused shopper asked, “Can someone please explain to me why Tesco have no bananas in stock what is this sorcery?”
Bananas are one of Tesco’s bestselling products, sourced primarily from Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Colombia. Supply chain disruptions, particularly due to extreme weather events, can significantly impact availability.
This is not the first time Tesco has faced banana shortages. In March last year, supermarkets across the UK, including Tesco and Aldi, were affected by supply issues caused by transatlantic storms. Stores in Cheshire, Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, and Scotland all reported low stock levels at the time.
As customers await restocks, Tesco is reportedly working with suppliers to resolve the issue and replenish shelves as soon as possible.
