A large fire broke out in central London on Thursday morning, sending thick smoke across the city’s skyline. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) confirmed that about 40 firefighters and six fire engines were deployed to control the blaze, which engulfed two buildings near Tottenham Street.
The fire was reported at 7:43 AM GMT, and within two hours, crews managed to bring it under control. An investigation into the cause of the fire is now underway.
Fire Spread to Building Roof as Crews Battled the Blaze
According to LFB station commander Alec McNally, the fire spread to an atrium-style conservatory near the roof of one of the buildings.
“This morning, crews were called to a fire at Tottenham Street that involved two buildings,” McNally said.
“Firefighters had to put out a fire that had developed onto an atrium-style conservatory, which was towards the roof of the building.”
One adult was rescued from the scene and taken to the hospital with mild smoke inhalation, officials confirmed.
Public Urged to Avoid the Area as Smoke Fills Streets
The London Fire Brigade urged residents and businesses in the area to keep windows and doors closed due to lingering smoke. Officials also advised the public to avoid Tottenham Street while emergency services remained on site.
Fire crews from Soho, Euston, and Islington were among those responding to the emergency. The LFB deployed a 32m turntable ladder to tackle the fire from above.
Cause of Fire Under Investigation
The cause of the fire remains unknown, and an official investigation is underway to determine how the blaze started. The LFB has not reported any further injuries at this time.
With the situation now under control, authorities are working to assess the extent of the damage and ensure public safety in the area.
