Several people have been arrested after violent clashes broke out between anti-immigration demonstrators and anti-racism protesters in Glasgow city centre.
Police Scotland launched a significant operation on Saturday as members of the Unite the Clans protest confronted anti-fascist campaigners near Glasgow Green. Officers, including mounted police, intervened to separate the rival groups after disorder erupted.
Police said: “Members of the public are being asked to avoid the area at this time, and we understand the concern this is causing in the community. Anyone with concerns can approach officers.
“This is a particularly challenging situation, and officers are working hard to bring this incident to an end.”
Witnesses reported punches being thrown after anti-immigration protesters moved towards the anti-racism group, while projectiles were also thrown. Helicopters circled overhead as police worked to contain the disorder near Saltmarket.
Demonstrators at the Unite the Clans rally chanted “Send them home” and carried placards reading “Stop the boats”, while blue smoke filled parts of the park.
During one speech, a protester declared: “It’s wonderful being white” and “I love being white”, drawing loud cheers from sections of the crowd. Another individual was heard saying: “I’m a Nazi and I love it.”
Counter-protesters, who outnumbered the anti-immigration group, responded with chants including “Nazi scum” and “There are more of us than you”. Some also directed chants of “scum” at police officers.
The clashes are the latest in a series of protests linked to migration in Glasgow. Police have previously warned that misinformation circulating online has contributed to rising tensions in recent weeks.
