West Ham striker Michail Antonio has been discharged from the hospital, more than three weeks after suffering a broken leg in a serious car accident on 7 December. The 34-year-old Jamaica international underwent surgery for a lower limb fracture after being rescued from his vehicle following the crash in Epping, Essex.
Antonio, West Ham’s all-time leading Premier League scorer with 68 goals in 268 league appearances, has begun his recovery journey. Despite his injury, Antonio remained connected to his team, speaking to his teammates via video call ahead of their crucial 2-1 win against Wolves on 9 December.
West Ham’s Tribute and Charitable Support
To honor Antonio and those who helped him, West Ham players donned shirts with “Antonio 9” before the Wolves game. The club later announced it would auction these shirts, raising close to £60,000 for the NHS and Air Ambulances UK charities.
In a statement on Tuesday, the club expressed gratitude to emergency services, air ambulance staff, and the NHS for their swift response and care during Antonio’s ordeal.
West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui previously described Antonio’s survival as a “miracle,” underscoring the severity of the crash.
Antonio’s Impact at West Ham
Antonio, a pivotal figure for West Ham, has built a legacy as the club’s top scorer in the Premier League. His teammates and fans continue to rally behind him as he begins the road to recovery.
The incident highlights not only the importance of emergency response teams but also the resilience of one of West Ham’s most beloved players.
